F-75

F-75 is a therapeutic milk powder

✓ For any case of severate acute malnutrition with medical complication and/or without appetite

When a child suffering from severe acute malnutrition arrives at the hospital, he/she often shows infections, hepatic and intestinal insufficiency, or electrolyte imbalances (excess or insufficiency of elements such as sodium, potassium, calcium or even magnesium). A child with such complications is unable to tolerate usual levels of proteins, fats and sodium. Therefore, it is important to begin nutritional treatment by giving foods with low levels of proteins, fats and sodium, but rich in carbohydrates.

F-75 therapeutic milk should be used in therapeutic feeding centers under medical supervision, and must never be given directly to families.

✓ To treat Severe Acute Malnutrition - Phase 1

F-75 therapeutic milk was designed for the stabilisation phase of inpatients suffering from severe acute malnutrition, that is phase 1 of the treatment protocol drawn up by the World Health Organisation (WHO). That stabilisation phase consists in ensuring the rehydration of children and the treatment of their medical complications, while initiating refeeding.

With its caloric density of 75 kcal per 100 ml of reconstituted milk, F-75 is not intended to make children put on weight, and its use should be limited to phase 1 (on average, 3 days).

F-100

F-100 is a therapeutic milk powder

✓ For any case of severe acute malnutrition with medical complication and/or without appetite

Patients suffering from severe acute malnutrition that have an appetite and are without major medical complications can commence treatment with the aim of gaining weight (transition phase and phase 2).

Treatment can take place in both in-patient and out-patient settings: F-100 therapeutic milk should only be used for in-patient care, and Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (Plumpy’Nut®) can be used for both in- and out-patient care.

✓ To treat Severe Acute Malnutrition - Phase 2

F-100 therapeutic milk was specifically developed for the nutritional recovery of patients suffering from severe acute malnutrition, during phase 2 of the treatment protocol drawn up by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

F-100 therapeutic milk conforms to the specifications of nutritionists for the treatment of patients suffering from severe acute malnutrition (marasmus / severe wasting, kwashiorkor / oedematous malnutrition, mixed forms).

This product must be used in therapeutic renutrition centres with medical supervision, and must not be distributed directly to families.

F-100 therapeutic milk is not adapted for well-nourished children

Immediate breastfeeding after birth, exclusive during the first 6 months and recommended for at least 24 months.

Plumpy'Nut

Plumpy'Nut® is a Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF)

✓ For children after 6 months of age

Plumpy’Nut® is specifically formulated for the nutritional rehabilitation of children from six months of age and adults suffering from severe acute malnutrition.

The invention of Plumpy’Nut® made home treatment/ambulatory or outpatient care possible for severely malnourished children with an appetite and without medical complications.

However, the vulnerable condition of severely malnourished children requires a health practitioner's prescription and regular medical check-ups.

Plumpy'Nut® should not be given to people who are allergic to peanuts or dairy products.

✓ To treat Severe Acute Malnutrition

Children who fall under the cut-off for severe acute malnutrition need to receive an adapted diet that allows them to regain a normal nutritional status. Providing the same nutritional value (but without the same use constraints) than F-100 therapeutic milk, Plumpy’Nut® is well-adapted to the needs of severely acute malnourished children.

Since it can be used at home without prior preparation, under the supervision of the mother or another member of the family, Plumpy’Nut® made outpatient treatment possible for most of the children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. Thanks to these characteristics, the number of malnourished children treated considerably increased and the adherence to the regularity of the treatment and the recovery rate improved.

A true revolution over therapeutic milks, Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTFs) like Plumpy'Nut® has since May 2007 been recommended by WHO, UNICEF, WFP and the UN Standing Committee on Nutrition in the

ReSoMal is a powder

✓ For the preparation of an Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS)

ReSoMal is used for the preparation of an oral rehydration solution (ORS) exclusively for people suffering from severe acute malnutrition. It must be used under medical supervision in therapeutic feeding centres, and must not be given directly to families.

✓ To treat Severe Acute Malnutriton and address mineral deficiencies

Seriously malnourished children commonly suffer from a deficiency of potassium and various other mineral deficiencies, as well as from an abnormally high level of sodium. In the event of dehydration, it is therefore necessary to give them a specific ORS containing less sodium, more potassium and more magnesium, zinc and copper.

ReSoMal was developed to meet this specific need. It must not be given to well-nourished people or those suffering from cholera (in these cases standard ORSs, which conform to the WHO formula, must be used).
